Agailjhara Upazila Chhatra Dal President of Barisal. An allegation of torture has been raised after arresting a land dealer for not paying subscription to Mahidul Islam. The businessman complained that the police did not take the case even after four days when he went to file a case at Agailjhara police station. The victim has been identified as Ujjal Kumar Raha (46).


Ujjal Kumar is the son of Ranjit Kumar Raha of Bakal village of Bakal union of Agailjhara upazila. On Sunday afternoon, Ujjal held a press conference at Agailjhara Press Club and explained the details of the incident. In his written statement, he claimed that Mahidul Islam, president of Agailjhara Upazila Chhatra Dal, demanded five lakh taka from him (Ujjbal). Threats were coming several times for non-payment of subscription.

In the written statement, it is said that last Friday at 11:30 pm, Ujjal Kumar was buying medicine at Agailjhara Sadar. At that time, Mahidul Islam called and asked to go to his personal office in Kalikhola. When Mahidul hit him with a stick, Ujjal fell down on the ground. Mohidul's brother-in-law Sohag Howladar, general secretary of the upazila Tanti party. There were 10 to 12 people including Mizan Molla, Joint Convener of Upazila Swachsevak Dal, Shahadat Biswas, Associate Hasan Howlader, Sagar Howlader. They beat Mahidul and detained him (Ujjbal) in his personal office. They threatened to kill him if he did not pay the ransom. The attackers snatched the money from Ujjwal's pocket.

Ujjal Kumar said, 'At around 4 pm, Mahidul called my wife Shikha Rani Sarkar from my phone and told me that she should come to the old Muktijoddha office in Kalikhola, Agailjhara Bazar, with 50,000 rupees. When my wife came around 4:30 in the afternoon and asked why I was detained, Mahidul said that she will not be able to stay in the area unless I pay five lakh taka. My wife cried and begged me to pay 50,000 rupees. The terrorists took out the memory card of my mobile phone. I am suffering from insecurity with my family due to the threat of terrorists for not paying money.

Ujjal Kumar complained that he was not getting any remedy from the police in this incident. He said, 'I recovered a bit after treatment and went to Agailjhara police station and reported the matter. If you want to file a case, the police hesitates without taking the case. Even after I went to the police station repeatedly, the police did not take the case even in the last four days.
