Hindu youth arrested for insulting religious sentiments in Facebook story

A young man was arrested by the police after he was accused of insulting Islam by writing two lines of a Lalon song and posting it on his Facebook story.

The name of the young man is Sanjay Rakshit (40). He is the son of Hari Narayan Rakshit of Mahishar Union of Vedarganj Upazila of Shariatpur. Sanjay is a goldsmith by profession.

Vedarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mintu Mondal confirmed to The Daily Star that Sanjay was arrested on Sunday.

In the screenshot of Sanjay's Facebook story, it was seen that he wrote there, 'If circumcision is given to a Muslim, then what will happen to the women's race?' These two lines are from Lalan's song 'Sab Loke Koy Lalan Ki Jaat Sansare'.

Vedarganj police station OC Mintu Mandal told Daily Star on Sunday at around 10 pm that a young man named Sanjay Rakshit has been arrested for writing two lines in the Facebook story. Some local people claimed that the writing hurt the sentiments of Muslims. They made a verbal complaint about the matter. So to avoid social chaos, Sanjay was arrested and sent to Shariatpur District Jail.

When asked who made the complaint, the OC said without mentioning their names, some local people made this complaint.

When asked if he knew that the two lines of the song that Sanjay had written in the story were part of Lalon's song, the OC said, 'If you want to know anything, come to the police station. I'm busy now, can't talk.' The OC hung up the phone.

When asked about the matter, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Vedarganj Circle Mushfiqur Rahman said, 'I cannot say anything about this. If you want to know something, go to the police station.'
